Protests of the Israel-Hamas war that are happening on the streets of downtown Chicago outside the 2024 Democratic National Convention filtered into a live taping of The Late Show With Stephen Colbert on Tuesday at the city’s Auditorium Theatre.
The outbursts occurred during former House speaker Nancy Pelosi’s appearance on Tuesday night’s episode. According to The Hollywood Reporter, which was in the audience, a fellow audience member shouted “Free Palestine!” and questioned US support for Israel several minutes into Pelosi’s interview. “For the people who can’t tell, there’s a protest going on in the audience right now,” host Stephen Colbert said. “Hold on, young lady, I can hear you. We’re actually at a commercial break, but the subject is on Israel and Palestine, and if you’ll have a seat, we have to go to a commercial break and when we come back, I will ask the next question I had on that subject, if you will listen.”
After Colbert questioned Pelosi about her involvement in Biden’s decision to step down from the 2024 presidential race, he shifted to a new topic. “Let’s talk about another aspect of power: the US using its power overseas,” he began. After again acknowledging the protest, Colbert asked: “If the goal is the peaceful and prosperous future for both Israelis and Palestinians, what role does the United States play?”
Pelosi first highlighted Biden’s decades of foreign policy experience. “Let me just say this was a role that President Biden played very well. For years, he was chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee,” she said. “He was a senator for a long time, vice president, and president. So his experience globally has been huge.”
After quoting John F. Kennedy’s inauguration credo, “Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country,” Pelosi noted that, “The very next sentence that he says in the speech is, ‘To the countries of the world, ask not what America can do for you, but what we can do working together for the freedom of mankind.’ That is our mission… So yes, we have had a commitment to Israel. It’s been in our security interest to do so. Israel was attacked by a terrorist organization. We want the hostages freed. But we don’t want children killed in Gaza. And so we have to come up with a solution. And right now, we just got word earlier today that Israel had agreed to the ceasefire agreement. We’re hoping that Hamas will too. But it takes me to the point of saying to you: War has no role in a civilized society. We have to learn more about trust and peace.”
When shouting continued from the audience, Colbert replied, “As you can see from the continuing protest out here, that answer is unsatisfying to some people. Would you like to respond to what they’re saying?” He then turned to the demonstrators and asked if they would “listen” to Pelosi’s response. Returning to Pelosi, Colbert continued, “They have said that the United States should not have any role in supplying Israel arms to kill people of Gaza. That’s what they are saying.”
“Israel has a right to defend itself,” Pelosi replied before arguing, “You cannot have peace unless you have a two-state solution. Israel, a secure Jewish democratic state in the region—and the Palestinians having their own secure country there as well. Unless you have a two-state solution, you will not have a resolution of this.”
When shouting from the audience increased, Colbert said, “Please don’t interrupt my guest” and then promptly ended Pelosi’s segment. “Madame Speaker, we’re a live show and we have to go at this point. Please come again and we can continue the conversation.”
According to The Hollywood Reporter, protesters inside the theater “left of their own accord, and the situation was handled peacefully.” A group of demonstrators outside who chanted “Nancy, Nancy, you can’t hide” were asked to leave by dozens of Chicago police officers, who reportedly warned arrest for those who didn’t exit the private property. Vanity Fair has reached out to a rep for the Late Show for comment.
The Israel-Hamas war, which hits its one-year mark in October, is expected to inspire continued protests during the coming days. The BBC reports that a much larger crowd is expected to emerge, with some organizers predicting “tens of thousands” by the end of the week.
