At the Golden Globes 2024 awards Sunday evening in Los Angeles, after doing the usual “who are you wearing?” song and dance, Jennifer Lopez answered a question about hubby Ben Affleck face-on: When Entertainment Tonight asked Lopez why “people [are] always worried about what face Ben has on,” Lopez went to bat for Affleck, saying, “he is happy.”
“Ben is doing alright,” Lopez said. “You don’t need to worry about Ben, let me just tell you. He is good. He is happy. He is here—he is nominated. I'm chilling, I don’t understand what people are so pressed for.”
Having an ultra-expressive face is something of an occupational hazard for an actor, but somehow nobody’s grumpy expressions seem quite as meme-able as those of Ben Affleck. Bless his heart, his visage has graced our feeds while smoking and looking miserable, contemplating the mystery of life with an enormous Dunkin' iced coffee in hand, gleefully communing with more Dunkin, gazing upon the vast and unknowable Atlantic Ocean, and much, much more. His face is his job, and he does his job well, but sometimes he and Lopez just get sick of talking about work, you know? It’s not Affleck’s fault he’s an entire emoji keyboard made sentient.
She doesn't get the fascination, adding of the pap shots and meme makers, “They don't pick up on my face.”
If she sounds kind of over it, well, it’s because she definitely is. In February 2023, at the Grammy Awards, Affleck went viral for sitting next to Lopez and doing what looked like some champion-level dissociating. Chris Pine at the Don’t Worry Darling premiere in Venice could only dream of this spaced-out of a facial expression. Lip readers even alleged that Lopez told to him to “look more friendly, look motivated.” After the Grammys, sources said that Lopez was incredibly aware of the discourse surrounding her husband’s face and his seeming internal investigation into the depths of time and the meaning of life, and she was “over it.” When she shared the trailer for Affleck’s Air shortly after, she chose a freeze-frame of Affleck in-character and looking particularly surly, captioning it “My husband’s happy face.”
It was in support of Air, in fact, that Bennifer attended the Globes last night. Affleck directed, starred in, and produced the film, which got a nod for best motion picture - comedy or musical, as well as an acting nom for Affleck’s bestie, Matt Damon. They didn’t take home any statues Sunday, but dang if Affleck didn’t look like he was having an okay time.
Just take it from Jenny from the Block: Ben’s fine.
