TMZ is reporting once again that Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck are throwing a wedding party in Georgia. The last time they reported their plans, the couple simply got married in Vegas and sent out their own news bulletin about it. But this time, the report is that the extravaganza is scheduled for this weekend: They’ll do it at Affleck’s plantation replica in Georgia outside Savannah. The estate comprises 87 acres, a five-bedroom guest house, a 6,000-square-feet antebellum Greek Revival mansion, and a little cottage. Plenty of space for guests here. They planned to marry at the same spot 20 years ago when they first considered marriage, sources told TMZ. Affleck had been trying to sell the thing, but pulled it off market in 2020, according to Radar Online. Here, if it all goes according to the latest reports, is their last hurrah.

The weekend plan all sounds fairly modern-traditional, according to Page Six, which has published additional details from anonymous sources. There will be a three-day “intimate celebration for family and friends,” including a rehearsal dinner on Friday, a ceremony on Saturday, and a barbecue and picnic on Sunday. How very now, very fresh to do the quickie, small wedding together and follow it up with a big party where they can take it slow, and focus on friends and family.

The publication also recently reported that event planner Colin Cowie is their maestro for the weekend (Cowie has a client list that includes Michael Jordan and Oprah, and Lopez has reportedly worked with him before). It’s rumored she’ll wear a custom couture Ralph Lauren dress made in Italy. Che bellissima!

This all sounds very them based on what we know of our close friends the Afflecks and their tastes. But doesn’t all this information feel a little off? Not to entertain conspiratorial thinking too much here, but is this detailed plan a big red herring? Are these news reports from inside their wedding-party prep a way to throw the world off their scent? Are they actually going to abscond to, like, Wyoming this weekend instead, stranding paparazzi outside a plantation in Georgia? I don’t want to accuse America’s sweethearts of leading their fans astray. It’s just that we’ve been through an era of the secret, airtight, absolutely-no-leaks weddings. All of this information served up on a platter feels a little too easy, you know? Just last week, there was that anonymous quote in Page Six about Affleck’s discomfort with the “almost Princess Diana–level” of paparazzi in Paris, where they went on their honeymoon, as they went from one major Parisian hotspot to another. The guy could understandably be tiring of the whole rigmarole, and be ready for a little more subterfuge.

Or maybe—maybe!—after the TMZ reports, the jig was up, and there was no use in expending energy on keeping it all down low. Occam’s razor could be useful here, right? The simplest theory is most likely the correct one. They are famous, the fans are interested, and the details leaked. Simple as that. I suppose all one can do is wait just a few more days, and sign up for J.Lo’s newsletter, where she’ll surely provide enough details to compare and contrast the reports with the execution at last.
