From the president of the United Auto Workers calling him a “scab” and Senator Raphael Warnock deeming him a “plague on the American conscience” to Hillary Clinton’s line about him falling asleep at his own criminal trial and Joe Biden’s quip that “crime will keep coming down when we put a prosecutor in the Oval Office instead of a convicted felon,” there wasn’t a lot for Donald Trump to like about night one of the Democratic National Convention. But the programming that probably got the most under his extremely thin skin? A video featuring a collection of former supporters who called him out on his lies, untrustworthiness, and lack of morals—and told the world they would not be voting for him in November.
In one clip, played in between speakers, three former Trump voters told the audience:
- “I’m actually embarrassed to say that I did vote for Trump in 2016”
- “Donald Trump has nothing but contempt for the American people and, ironically, for those who claim to be his base”
- “He’s only interested in benefiting himself personally”
- “I do not trust that he can do the right thing anymore”
- “We’ve seen what Donald Trump really is, and it disgusts me to my core”
- “I don’t think the man can be trusted”
- “He talks out of both sides of his mouth”
- “He’s a very dishonest person”
- “I hate the way he disrespects women”
- “Voting against Trump and for Kamala Harris is the right thing to do”

And the hits will continue on Tuesday night. Included in this evening’s speaker lineup is former Trump communications director Stephanie Grisham, who also previously served as chief of staff and press secretary to Melania Trump. Among other things, Grisham revealed in 2022 that on January 6, 2021, the then president “was in the dining room gleefully watching [the footage] on his TV, as he often did, [remarking], ‘Look at all of the people fighting for me,’ hitting rewind, watching it again.”

In a statement to NBC News, Grisham told the outlet, “I never thought I’d be speaking at a Democratic convention. But after seeing firsthand who Donald Trump really is, and the threat he poses to our country, I feel very strongly about speaking out.”
